2020 4-13 JUNE Pilgrimage to Italy with Father Matt Kiehl

THR 4 JUNE    Depart from USA from  Washington  in the evening.

FRI 5 JUNE     Breakfast onboard before arriving in Frankfurt. Transfer to our flight to Rome.  After Passport and Customs, the group will be met by your Italian Tour Director and assisted to motor coach.
Depart for Assisi, stopping along the way for light refreshments before arriving at Santa Maria del Angeli Basilica. Take time to pray in this most sacred of places to the Franciscan Order, the Porziuncola where St. Francis founded the Order of Friars Minor. Venerate the place where he died and visit the garden of thornless roses before Father celebrates Mass. Check into our hotel across the plaza and enjoy dinner and overnight.

SAT 6 JUNE After breakfast, start your day at the Basilica of St. Francis to see the crypt where the saint is buried before Father celebrates Mass.
After, meet your local guide who will take you on a special tour of the Lower and Upper Basilica to see the famous Giotto frescoes which highlight the Saint’s life and ministry. Continue your tour through the streets of Assisi, learning about the history of this little town and end at the Basilica of St. Clare where you can pray in the chapel which houses the cross which ‘spoke to St. Francis’ and venerate the incorrupt body of St. Clare.
A free afternoon to enjoy the town or climb up to Monte Subasio to L’Eremo delle Carceri (the Carceri Hermitage), the Saint’s favorite retreat. Dinner and overnight in Assisi.

SUN 7 JUNE After breakfast, depart the hotel and drive to Roma and the Catacombs of St. Callixtus, the official cemetery of the Church of Rome in the 3rd century AD. Around half a million Christians were buried here.   Father will celebrate Mass among the many martyrs and 16 popes.   After a lunch break, we stop at the first of Rome’s four major basilicas: St. Paul’s Outside the Walls. Have a short introductory tour before praying at the tomb of the Saint. Continue into the city and check into our hotel . Dinner on your own.

MON 8 JUNE. After breakfast, depart to visit The Basilica of St. Mary Major, one of the oldest and most important shrines in the world dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Have time to venerate a relic of the manger from Bethlehem in which the baby Jesus and a painting of the Blessed Mother (Salus Populi Romani) attributed to St. Luke. Kept in the Borghese Chapel, it was brought back from the Holy Land by St. Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine.
After a lunch break, we continue to the oldest and highest ranking basilicas in Rome, the Cathedral Church of Saints John the Baptist and the Evangelist in the Lateran. This is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Rome in the city of Rome and is the official church of the Holy Father. After a tour and time for prayer, we cross the street to the Santa Scala or Holy Stairs. These white marble steps form the staircase which once led to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem and which, therefore, were sanctified by the footsteps of Jesus Christ during His Passion. They are encased in wooden ones.
Finish the day at the Basilica of the Holy Cross which holds some of the most precious relics of Christ’s Passion. Father will celebrate Mass for us here before we return to the hotel. Dinner on your own.

TUE 9 JUNE    After breakfast, depart for the Crypt of the Basilica of St. Peter’s where Father will celebrate Mass. After have time to wander in the great church following your provided personal handbook. Have time to pray in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel or venerate the Saints who are buried here. Marvel at the art work and con template the magnificence of our Catholic home parish.
After a lunch break, we have a tour of the Vatican Museums which includes the Sistine Chapel. Dinner on your own and Return to the hotel.

WED 10 JUNE       After breakfast, join the Faithful from around the world for the weekly Papal Audience at St. Peter’s Basilica. At the end of the Audience the Pope will pray together with those attending the Audience, the Our Father prayer in Latin. This Prayer is normally printed on the back of the Papal Audience Ticket. At the end of the Prayer as Head of the Catholic Church he will impart his Apostolic Blessing upon the crowd which also extends to loved ones that are sick and suffering and blesses any religious articles such as rosary beads that people have brought with them for the purpose of the blessing.
After a lunch break, we’ll gather to begin our special walk through the history of Rome. See Hadrian’s Tomb, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain (throw a coin in to make sure your return to Rome), Vittorio Emanuele II Monument, Capitoline Hill, the Forum and the Colesseum.
We end the day at the church of St. Clemente, a unique superimposition of four construction levels spanning 22 centuries. This ancient church was transformed over the centuries from a private home that was the site of clandestine Christian worship in the 1st century to a grand public basilica by the 6th century, reflecting the emerging Catholic Church’s growing legitimacy and power. After a short tour, Father will celebrate Mass for us before we head back to the hotel. Dinner on your own,

THR 11 JUNE.    After Mass in the House Chapel, enjoy breakfast and a FREE DAY in Rome. Dinner on your own.

FRI 12 JUNE. After breakfast, depart for Fumicino airport and our Lufthansa flight home via Munich. Arrive home with memories to Give Thanks and Remember.
